When I first fell into the cut-ups and put those texts together which appeared in Minutes to Go, they amused me. I laughed out loud. I knew all about Breton's precious and pseudoautomatic writing and I had heard of the poem that TristanTzara pulled out of a hat about the same time that Aragon was reciting his alphabet poem to the avantgarde of the 1920s. all that was old hat. The cut-ups were brand new because the words were treated like mere material, like the images they are and treated in a painter's creative way rather than a writer's metaphysical view of language as the lesser part of speech. Words were attacked physically with the scissors or framer's Stanley blade.

I showed the first texts to Burroughs hoping to hear him laugh out loud as I had. He took off his glasses to reread them even more intently, saying : " You've got something big here, Brion."

We began to find out a whole lot of things about the real nature of words and writing...What are words and what are they doing? Where are they going? The cut-up method treats words as the painter treats his paint, raw material with rules and reasons of its own... Abstract painters found that the real hero of the picture is the paint. Painters and writers of the kind I respect want to be heroes, challenging fate in their lives and in their art. What is fate ? Fate is written : Mektoub means "It is written." So ... if you want to challenge and change fate ... cut up words. Make them a new world.

Had a transcendental storm of color visions today in the bus going to Marseilles. We ran through a long avenue of trees and I closed my eyes against the setting sun. An overwhelming flood of intensely bright patterns in supernatural colors exploded behind my eyelids: a multi-dimensional kaleidoscope whirling out through space. I was out in a world of infinite number. The vision stopped abruptly as we left the trees. Was that a vision? What happened to me?

Ian Sommerville, who also read Walter, ( Walter Grey, "The Living Brain" ) wrote me from Cambridge on February 15, 1960:

"I have made a simple flicker machine. You look at 'it with your eyes shut and the flicker plays over your eyelids. Visions start with a kaleidoscope of colors on a plane in front of the eyes and gradually become more complex and beautiful, breaking like surf on a shore until whole patterns of color are pounding to get in. After awhile the visions were permanently behind my eyelids and I was in the middle of the whole scene with limitless patterns being generated around me. There was an almost unbearable feeling of spatial movement for a while but It was well worth getting through for I found that when it stopped I was high above the earth in a universal blaze of glory. Afterwards I found that my perception of the world around me had increased very notably. All conceptions of being dragged or tired had dropped away..."

I made a "machine" from his ensuing description and added to it an interior cylinder covered vith the type of painting I have developed in the three years since my first flicker experience. Flicker may prove to be a valid instrument of practical psychology: some people see and others do not. The DREAMACHINE, with it's patterns visible to the open eye, induces people to see. The fluctuating elements of flickered design support the development of autonomous "movies", intensely pleasurable and, possibly, instructive to the viewer.

What is art? What is color? What is vision? These old questions demand new answers when, in the light of the DREAMACHINE one see all of ancient and modern abstract art with eyes closed.

'Brazilian Stonehenge' discovered

**Brazilian archaeologists have found an ancient stone structure in a remote corner of the Amazon that may cast new light on the region's past.

The site, thought to be an observatory or place of worship, pre-dates European colonisation and is said to suggest a sophisticated knowledge of astronomy.

Its appearance is being compared to the English site of Stonehenge.

It was traditionally thought that before European colonisation, the Amazon had no advanced societies.

Winter solstice

The archaeologists made the discovery in the state of Amapa, in the far north of Brazil.

A total of 127 large blocks of stone were found driven into the ground on top of a hill.

Well preserved and each weighing several tons, the stones were arranged upright and evenly spaced.

It is not yet known when the structure was built, but fragments of indigenous pottery found at the site are thought to be 2,000 years old.

What impressed researchers was the sophistication of the construction.

The stones appear to have been laid out to help pinpoint the winter solstice, when the sun is at its lowest in the sky.

It is thought the ancient people of the Amazon used the stars and phases of the moon to determine crop cycles.

Although the discovery at Amapa is being compared to Stonehenge, the ancient stone circle in southern England, the English site is considerably older.

It is thought to have been erected some time between 3000 and 1600 BC.

Falling into Perfection

This dance performance was choreographed by Dianna Ross and featured Joseph Pikalek and Kersten Stuart. The performance was part of a larger project produced by Janice Rocke at the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur California.

The project was very multilayered and art oriented. The essential idea that I was attempting to convey had to do with what I termed as “de- fragmentation,” which is not a real word, but, to me essentially meant “putting together the fragmented parts of a more valuable whole.”
I began my project by collecting filmed imagery and patterns including, but not limited to, flowers, tides, bones, rocks, paint swirls in a painting, pipes, and anything else that I thought was interesting. My next step was to build a backdrop. In my back yard, I assembled a variety of driftwood, redwood slabs, mirrors, empty picture frames, a few other unusual and/or interesting items and hollow core doors, which I had painted green and blue,. My idea was that I would replace the areas of green and blue with the video taped images and patterns that I had been collecting to create a collage of visual imagery. Afterward, an artist friend and I built structures from recycled materials and old paintings of ours in front of the backdrop. I videotaped us doing so. I combined clips of our work with other short scenes to make little mini films. The mini films were then shown on screens inside the structures that we built. The structures were then set up for the event at Henry Miller Library amidst another collage background of green and blue hollow core doors, redwood slabs, driftwood, mirrors etc. I hired musicians and a group of dancers to perform throughout the day of the event. The dancers wore masks and drifted nonchalantly though the crown instead of being on a center stage area. I also hired two other camera people beside myself to film the various goings-on at this event. Finally, I edited the footage from the event together with the short films that played on the little screens
inside the assemblages. The result was a 15 minute sensually textured montage of wistful imagery that would probably not appeal to the average soul, but involved a lot of hard work, creativity and organization to produce. I did all of this with very little money.
